Can’t Access the Internet

If you can not get access to the Internet try these helpful tips before calling for help:

  1. First try restarting your computer

    If that did not work,

  2. Check to see if you are getting an IP address from your Internet service provider (ISP). To do this follow these steps:
    - Go to Start > Run
    - The “Run” Dialog box will open up. In the Open field type in “cmd”. Then click the Ok button
    - A command prompt window will open up. Type in the following text where the cursor is blinking: ipconfig /renew
    - Your IP address should be displayed. If your IP address starts with 169 (i.e. 169.X.X.X) then you are either not getting an IP address from your Internet router or your ISP. This means you need to reset your Internet router or ISP modem. Follow the directions in step 3 to do this.

  1. Reset you’re your ISP modem by doing the following:
    - If you have a high speed Internet connection, reset your cable modem/DSL modem
    - If you have a dial up connection, try the following: 1) Check your phone line to see if you have a dial tone, 2) Make sure your phone line is plugged into your computer modem 3) make sure you are dialing the correct ISP phone number
    - If you have a wireless network, reset your WiFI router by unplugging the power and then plugging it back in

    If that did not work,

  2. If you are still having problems accessing the Internet, call your local ISP provider
